Chinchilla

Situated at the convergence of the Warrego Highway and Wondai Road, Chinchilla is a town within the Darling Downs Region of Queensland, roughly 286 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, the state capital. Built on the banks of Charley's Creek, the community has an estimated population of 3,682 residents, and agriculture and meat production are its main industries.

The history of Chinchilla dates back to 1827 when Alan Cunningham travelled from Sydney, New South Wales to explore the Darling Downs Region. In 1844, Ludwig Leichhardt, a Prussian naturalist, explored the area, which was then settled within two years by pastoralists. The town itself was established in 1877. Its name derives from the Aboriginal word jinchilla, which means "cypress pine".

Part of the Local Government Area of the Western Downs Regional Council, Chinchilla is represented by the Electoral District of Warrego in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, and in the Australian House of Representatives by the Federal Division of Maranoa.

Chinchilla features a number of local attractions that express its country ambience courtesy of its cultural, historical, and natural heritage. Some of the town's most popular events and sites, which residents and visitors alike can enjoy, include the Chinchilla Folk Museum, Chinchilla Grandfather Clock Campdraft, Chinchilla Melon Festival, Petrified Wood, and Rotary May Day Festival.
