Distinguished and Famous people from Chinchilla
🎵 Pete Murray
Singer-songwriter Pete Murray grew up in Chinchilla before moving to Brisbane at sixteen. In an interview, he described the country town as a very different environment from the city where he began his music career. Songs including So Beautiful and Better Days later brought his voice to a national audience. His own recollections place Chinchilla at the beginning of that journey. His move from country childhood to city performances forms an early chapter in a career built around acoustic songs and an immediately recognisable vocal style.
✈️ Bob Russell
Bob Russell bought Carawa, a grazing property near Chinchilla, after earlier station work and an apprenticeship in shepherding in Scotland. He ran cattle and later sheep, while a growing enthusiasm for aircraft brought another local role: he helped establish aero clubs at Chinchilla, Roma and Surat. Wartime flying earned him the Air Force Cross, and his later business career centred on sugar mills. Carawa was sold in 1947. Chinchilla therefore belongs to his farming and early aviation years, when looking after stock and learning to fly were parts of the same unusually varied working life.
🦋 John Mann
John Mann became officer-in-charge of the Chinchilla Field Station in 1929, helping rear and release the moth Cactoblastis cactorum against invasive prickly pear. An early love of butterflies had brought him into professional insect collecting and then the Commonwealth’s control programme. At Chinchilla, careful breeding and distribution formed part of a collective scientific effort that reclaimed badly affected country. Mann later researched other weeds and became a senior entomologist. His local association is direct research work, rather than a distant connection through an award or memorial. Tiny insects made a remarkably large difference to the landscape around him.
